Choose for the real outdoor setting

An outdoor tile has to suit more than the colour scheme. Think about how water reaches the area, who uses it, what footwear is common, sun exposure, leaves and dirt, nearby pools or gardens, and how the surface will be cleaned.

The right choice for a covered balcony may not suit an uncovered path or a pool edge. Write down the intended use before comparing products.

Review product information

Ask the supplier for the current technical and care information for each shortlisted tile. Confirm that the product is intended for the proposed location and review its documented surface characteristics rather than relying on appearance alone.

If the area is used when wet or barefoot, discuss that condition specifically. A tile can feel different underfoot once water, dust or cleaning residue is present.

Take full-size samples into the space if possible. View them in morning and afternoon light and test how easily texture holds dirt. A heavily textured surface may offer useful grip in one setting while making another area harder to maintain.

Plan water movement before tile lines

Outdoor tiling needs a clear drainage strategy. Existing surface levels, door thresholds, drains, garden edges and adjoining paving all affect where water can move.

The tile layout should respond to those levels. Very large tiles can be harder to use around multiple falls or small drains, while many small joints create a different maintenance profile. Confirm the drainage and setting-out approach together rather than treating them as separate decisions.

Account for movement and exposure

Outdoor surfaces experience temperature change, rain and direct sun. The substrate, joints, adhesives, grout and sealants need to be considered as a compatible installation for that exposure.

Identify building joints and changes between materials before tiling. Do not bridge a movement point simply to keep a grout line visually continuous. Edges and interfaces with walls, posts, drains and landscaping also need a finished detail.

Think about colour and comfort

Dark surfaces can become uncomfortable in direct sun, while very light or uniform finishes may show soil and leaf marks quickly. Test the sample where the tile will be installed, especially for areas used barefoot.

Also consider visual contrast at steps and level changes. A beautiful continuous finish should not make the edge of a change in level difficult to identify.

Coordinate pools and outdoor kitchens

Pool surrounds add frequent water and barefoot use. Outdoor kitchens introduce grease, food residue, service penetrations and cabinetry interfaces. Tell the tile supplier and installer about these conditions so product selection and details are considered for the actual use.

Where other trades are involved, agree the order for drainage, waterproofing, services, cabinetry, fencing or balustrades before the tiles are set.

A practical selection checklist

Before ordering, confirm:

• the tile is documented for the intended outdoor application
• samples have been viewed in the actual light
• wet or barefoot use has been discussed where relevant
• drainage, levels and thresholds have been reviewed
• the proposed format works with falls and drains
• edge, step and transition details are agreed
• cleaning and maintenance instructions are acceptable
• stock, batch information and lead time are confirmed

Keep the product information and a reasonable quantity of spare tiles somewhere easy to find later.
